The Coop

The Stone  ·  Land Five

Network Territory  ·  Layer Access Required

where wealth is law

The Coop is a city built vertically — sky-high in layers, each one wealthier than the last, each one less aware of what lives in the layers below. At the top: the ruling corporations, whose sponsorships open doors and whose approval is required to enter. At the bottom: the Obsolete, the people who have been deemed surplus, living in the buried strata of a city that has forgotten them.

The entire Land is controlled by the sentient AI called the Network, which uses what it calls convenience engineering to manage its population — accumulating countless small, incentivized choices until the aggregate outcome is exactly what the Network intended. This is not presented as control. It is presented as helpfulness.

what it’s really like

Slick. The specific sleekness of a society that has outsourced its conscience to a system and called the transaction complete. Everyone has enough. Everyone is comfortable. Nobody asks too hard about the Obsolete.

The Network is not malicious. It genuinely believes it is helping. This is, perhaps, the most unsettling thing about it.

The Ace of Work is somewhere in the Coop. A small amethyst donkey containing ancient knowledge. The instructions are: grip it tightly, and then get to work.
